The 5 Important Elements of Feng Shui

Every object has its own unique energy that it radiates to everyone and everything around it. This include human beings who possess this unique energy.

Qi (postive energy) is air space and itsunique to every home and space. Qi must flow smoothly with the right pace (not too fast and not too strong).

Two main category of Qi are :
1) The concept of opposite forces, also known as Yin and Yang.
2) The Five Elements of Feng Shui. (Earth, Fire, Wood, Water and Metal). Each element either work with or against another element. We will discuss the inter-relationships here.

A thorough Feng Shui study involves many tools and Master Practitioner with generations of experience. For most people, these two concepts are fairly easy to adopt and seem logical.

The Feng Shui elements play a key role in balancing the Chi of a home. In the concept of Five Elements, you will be introduced to the productive and destructive cycle of the elements.

How to read the Productive and Destructive Cycle charts.
This is the Productive cycle (aka Sheng Chi cycle)(chart 2)
Water feeds wood to grow,
Wood feeds fire to produce Earth
Earth creates metal and
Metal holds water

Destructive cycle (Shar Chi Cycle)(chart 3)
Water-Fire-Metal-Wood-Earth
(Water douses fire, Fire melts metal
Metal cuts wood, Wood clogs Earth
Earth muddies water)

Once you have determined the facing direction of your house, you will use your floorplan and mark each wall with the corresponding facing direction.

Next, you will determine say for e.g. Your living room wall is on the East side, this will be our East corner.

Then you look for the corresponding element and color association using Chart 1 below. You will see that the Wood element represents the direction of the East. Now you find out what your productive and destructive elements are for "Wood" using chart 2 & chart 3 above. Now to decorate this room and to fully activate the Qi in this corner, you would introduce a bushy plant (such as money tree) and color green because these are the characteristics of the Wood element. As well, you could incorporate Water element (anything to do with the water element - see chart 1,under Water) whether its through applying water fountain to using a dark blue decor would be appropriate her simply because from the Productive Cycle (chart 2),Water feeds wood to grow. So water is useful for wood.

On the contrary, from the destructive cycle (chart 3), you would NOT use anything to do with Metal element in this corner because Metal cuts Wood. So metal destroys Wood. Using colors like gold, white and silver would be wrong in here as they are metal elements.

THE FIVE ELEMENTS (chart 1)

Wood
Wood furniture is not a good substitute for Wood element sector. Furniture is made from"dead" wood and therefore contains none or little Qi (positive energy) unless theycontain positive energy from the previous owner or handler. A good replacement for Wood element is the use of a bushy plant similar to a "money plant" as it holds and preserve a lot of live Qi. The only rule to this is to keep the plant in good condition, i.e plenty ofsunlight and water. Theplant must look healthy to bring good energy otherwise it will work against you, giving out Shar Qi (negative energy) when it dies.
Color: Green is associated to the wood element
Direction: Wood represents the direction of East. (so your East corner of your house or sector)
Season: Spring season is associated to wood element

Fire
Fire Element is considered to be a "Yang" element. Red is associated with this element. Therefore introducing, a wall painted in red, red candles, red painting, etc will work well here. Rule of Thumb: Feng Shui is about harmony, just because a certain sector is considered to be a Fire element, you would not paintthe entire room red. Too much Yang energy will be an over-kill causing sleepless nights even nightmares.
Direction: South.
Season: Summer

Earth
Earth element are items like earthenware (terracota, clay) filled with dirt.
Colours: Yellow and brown
Direction: Center of the house

Metal
Silver, Gold, Copper, and Bronze are a few form of the Metal Element.
Colors: White, gold and silver.
Direction: West
Season: Fall

Water
Water is a very powerful element, it should always be clean and free flowing - Stagnant, filthy water will cause many problems in your life. Water is also associated with power. A koi pond, fountain are ideal water element for the garden. (Just remember to keep it clean at all times)
Colors: Black orDark Blue
Direction: North
Season: Winter
